The new year is supposed to be a time where new goals are set and resolutions are made. While this is traditional behavior for many individuals across the world, for one family, the new year is now going to mark a time that represents something much more different- the remembrance of their 20-year-old daughter who lost her life in an auto accident.

It happened in the early hours of New Year’s Day, around 6:40 a.m. Mia Cepeda, 20, was headed south on the Turnpike, just before Atlantic Boulevard in Broward County when she began to veer into another lane. As a result, she swiped a vehicle occupied by 53-year-old Nicolas Quinones and then lost control of her own car. She drove into a median and then crashed into a canal.

After Cepeda was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment, she died as a result of the injuries she suffered from. The driver of the other vehicle involved was not hurt. The cause of the accident still isn’t clear, according to the Miami Herald.  Things like speeding, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and not wearing a seatbelt are all being considered as reasons for the accident being a fatal one. The truth is, many individuals engage in reckless behavior on New Year’s Eve and even on New Year’s Day and many deadly accidents transpire. While Cepeda may not have been negligent, a full investigation will tell why this young woman is no longer with us.
