A tragic hit-and-run accident occurred today on the busy roadways in Miami Dade that left both a father and son dead. The Florida Highway Patrol is saying that a silver Chevy Silverado lost control and went into the grass off the northbound ramp to State Road 836 eastbound [Source: NBC Miami]. A young man, who has been identified as 34-year-old Cesar Eduardo Cepeda, was driving that truck and decided to call his father to come help him. 57-year-old Jose Eduardo Cepeda Luna showed up to help his son who had been stuck on the side of the road. Shortly after Luna arrived at the location where his son’s vehicle went off the roadway, a motorist operating a black Chevy Camaro lost control of their vehicle right where Cepeda had gone off the road. The driver of the Camaro struck both son and father. The two did not survive the impact.

The driver of the Camaro allegedly fled the scene of the accident in the vehicle the father had been driving and authorities are still on the hunt for the motorist. He/she is likely looking at some serious charges for engaging in a hit-and-run accident that resulted in two fatalities as well as for taking possession of a vehicle that didn’t belong to them. Although the vehicle was later recovered in Homestead, the driver was nowhere to be found.

While the news source wasn’t able to report what caused either vehicle to lose control of their vehicles, it is important to take a moment and recognize some of the factors that do cause this to occur. One of those is distracted driving.

Florida has been ranked as one of the most dangerous states to drive in

If you’ve ever driven in Miami, whether it was on the 826, I-95, or the Turnpike, you know that things can get a little hectic, especially during traffic hour. Because Miami is a congested city as it is, aside from the residents who live there, you also have drivers entering and leaving the city for both business and pleasure. With more drivers on the roads, the riskier things get. Aside from the crowded roads, Miami, along with the rest of the entire state of Florida, has been recognized for its lack of safe drivers.

According to the Miami Herald, Florida ranked second-worst in the nation for having drivers who are distracted behind the wheel. Some forms of distracted driving include:
