Single vehicle crash results in the death of one woman near Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, LA – Drivers can lose control of their vehicles for many different reasons. This can be due to driver error such as distractions, fatigue, or intoxication. However, things like poor road conditions and visibility, mechanical problems, and obstacles on the road are not always the driver’s fault. Unfortunately, some single vehicle collisions can result in serious injuries or death, regardless of who was at fault.

Local news for the Acadiana area reported on a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a woman from Kaplan, LA [1].

Woman dies after drifting off of southern Louisiana road

The incident occurred in St. Martin Parish, which is southwest of Baton Rouge. The Louisiana State Police received a call to respond to the area of Louisiana Highway 328 near Rue Bois Chene Road. This was at about 8:30 pm on a Tuesday night.

They think that the 37 year old female victim was going eastbound when her car went off of the road to the left side and then into a ditch. No one else appeared to be injured and no other vehicles were affected by the accident. The victim was apparently not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The report stated that the woman was injured during the initial impact, then died at some time later that night while being transported to the hospital. The Louisiana State Police took a toxicology sample, as is required in all fatal accidents. They suspect that the woman may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.

The police were still in the process of investigating the incident at the time of publication. They advised the public to be careful of the dangers of driving while impaired and to make good transportation decisions.

Will there be legal consequences for this accident?

The victim’s family has some options available to them depending on the results of the police investigation. If a person, government, or business is responsible for the crash due to things like problems with the vehicle or the roads, they can bring a wrongful death lawsuit to try to recover damages. If the woman was intoxicated and caused her own injuries, it is less likely that a lawsuit can be brought.
