Young girl dies in accident in Zachary area
Zachary, LA – Depending on the actions of a driver leading up to a motor vehicle accident, it is possible that they can face criminal charges as well as civil liability. Police often make arrests for acts such as reckless driving, drunk driving, or vehicular manslaughter when they reach an accident scene. In addition to these charges, it is likely that the driver and their insurance provider will also have to deal with the costs of the collision in civil court, and they may have to pay for injuries or compensation for a wrongful death. Louisiana law also allows the victim or their family to ask for punitive damages in cases where drunk driving was a factor.
The Advocate reported on the progression of a criminal case against a driver who was arrested after causing an accident that ended the life of a six year old girl in Louisiana [1].
Six year old girl dies when driver hits car from opposite direction of traffic
The man had been arrested a few months earlier for causing the deadly collision in the town of Jackson which is just north of Zachary. At an arraignment in the East Feliciana Courthouse, he pled not guilty to crimes for vehicular homicide and additional counts of first degree vehicular negligent injuring. Police had previously reported that in late November of 2022, the suspect was driving on La. Highway 10 in Jackson when his vehicle went to the left over the center dividing line. His vehicle collided with another car containing the victim and her two parents. The two adults in the victim’s car survived the crash, but they were injured and needed to be transported for treatment. After the 62 year old male suspect was initially booked into jail, his bond was set at $101,000 and he posted the money to be released. There was no information given regarding whether the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol when he caused the crash
The local district attorney has the trial set for about three months from the time of the report. The defendant’s attorney said she cannot comment on the ongoing case, but she said that her client is very upset about the death of the young girl and the situation as a whole.
